Spring Bedroom Redo

After we tackled the living room this weekend, our bedroom got a little makeover of its own, thanks to (you guessed it) Ikea!  (Are you sick of hearing about Ikea yet?… 🙂 )

Here’s a quick reminder of our master bedroom, after the sprucing up we did last year.

And again a few months later, with my newly created placemat pillows.

We decided to keep the furniture placement the same as it has been, but with the addition of new linens, we totally changed the look!

I think I had the idea in the back of my mind that, with our master closet looking so spiffy and our master bath not far behind, it was time to show a little love to our bedroom as well.

I can’t wait to see these three rooms 100% complete!  The color palette of charcoal, yellow, white, and wood is one of our absolute favs.

The dark gray curtains replaced the white and blue ones I made last year.  While I loved our old curtains, I really don’t know what I was thinking – hanging un-lined white curtains in the bedroom of a couple of DINKs (dual-income-no-kids)?  We like to sleep in on the weekends, and our new gray curtains make our bedroom positively cave-like when they’re shut!

Here’s a little proof that real people live in this house and not everything is “designed” just for the sake of looking pretty.  I know not everybody would show you this side of our room, but we like to keep it real at Heardmont!

Yes, that’s an elliptical machine.  Yes, it’s the first thing we see when we wake up and the last thing we see when we go to bed.  No, you don’t want to know the last time I used it…

At least it’s color-coordinated, right? 😉

Anyway, back to the pretty side of the room. You probably could have guessed that everything new in this photo is courtesy of Ikea – the drapes, the bedding, and the rug! And a side note on that rug: I have lusted after that baby for probably 3 years, and I was so happy that when we made the trip to Dallas I actually had a reason to bring it home with me!

See the gray shams on those Euro pillows in the back?  Would you believe I made those from an extra set of curtains?  Sure did!  At $19.99 for a pair of panels, I was able to cover 2 pillows AND have plenty of material left for the “runner” at the foot of our bed.

You can catch a tutorial on the Euro shams tomorrow!

The lamps and nightstands have been in our room since last year.  I still love the simple glass lamps (from JC Penney) with the white shades (Target) on those 2-shelf tables (bookcases via Pier 1).

The view from my dresser isn’t too bad either!  What do you think of my little brass elephant?  He’s a lonely bookend I found at one of my favorite thrift stores a few months ago.  Even though she doesn’t necessarily match, I decided our blue ceramic swan could stay and keep him company (and up the quirk factor just a bit).

So there you have it – our fabric-centric master bedroom update.  My favorite part of this makeover had to be that it only took an afternoon to pull together (counting the time to IRON those darn curtains) and it didn’t involve lifting a brush or a roller at all!

In case you’re curious, here’s the budget breakdown.

Curtains: 3 sets @ $20 each
Duvet Cover: $40
Gray Sheets: $28
Area Rug: $159
Euro Pillows: 2 @ $6 each
Yellow Pillow: Free (thanks Mom!) 😀

Total: $299

Now, honest opinions please.  Would you have guessed that this is mostly an Ikea-sourced room?  Does it look too matchy-matchy, or did I do ok with one of my first attempts at mixing patterns?  I would love to hear your thoughts!  Thanks!

  1. Wow Meredith! I love it! I think the darker drapes look great and they have the added benefit of allowing you to sleep in–very nice. I love all of the colors and how the yellow in the pillow and rug pop against the other more subdued colors.

    Great job!

  2. Alaina says:

Meredith it looks great! it definitely doesn’t look matchy matchy i love that rug with the bedspread! and the color pallet is perfect for spring!!

  3. I definitely LOVE the color palette! I think I would stay snuggled up in bed all day if I had that cozy bedroom. 🙂 And the rug? It makes me swoon. 🙂

  4. Allisha says:

I love the colors! Where did you get that awesome mirror?

By the way, so jealous you get to sleep in 😉

    • Meredith says:

      Hey Allisha,
Thank you! The mirror was actually a Craigslist find – probably not what you wanted to hear. 🙂 I was supremely shocked to spot it in the newest Sex and the City movie though (wrote a post about it here: http://welcometoheardmont.com/2010/06/a-home-decor-wheres-waldo/), so maybe if you’re better at googling than I am you could find out more about it!

      • Sarah says:

        Hey Meredith,
I know I am probably the millionth person to ask about the mirror, but I was just wondering what the dimensions were. I thought I found one that looked pretty similar and on second glance it looks a little thin in the middle at 19″. Let me know. Thanks

  5. Angel says:

Looks nice. My question is this. How well did the sheets from Ikea fit. I have heard that there stuff is a little off and that it does not fit well with mattresses not from Ikea. I love Ikea and the prices and have thought of getting linens there but have not for this reason.

    • Meredith says:

      Hi Angel,
Thanks for the question! I would say that the sheets do not fit as well as some we’ve purchased in the past, but they aren’t so bad that I regret getting them – just a bit baggy on the sides of the mattress, etc. If I knew I could find the right color gray in a fairly high thread count from Target or Walmart when we got back from Ikea, I would have skipped the Ikea sheets. I hope that helps!

  6. Looks great. I notice another Ikea treat on the floor. hahahaha
    Also, YAY yellow and gray.

  7. Jenn says:

Pray for me…the scraping of popcorn ceilings begins tomorrow. Ugh…

  8. Anne says:

Meredith!! This is so incredible. WOW it looks so good I love the spread and the yellow and the curtains. You Did a fantastic job LOVE it.

  9. Morgan says:

I really like it and I don’t think it looks to matchy matchy. I love how you layered everything and I think it looks so grown-up and gorgeous! Can’t wait to build up some funds to finally tackle our master bedroom. It looks so sad right now… Haha

  10. I really like it! I liked your bedroom previously, but changing it up is never a bad thing. 🙂 I think my favorite change is the rug. I have always loved that rug.

  12. Wow, it looks wonderful! First of all, I’m in LOVE with that mirror above the bed (where did you find it??) and your mustard yellow wing back chair. Great job.

    • Meredith says:

      Hi Morgan,
Thank you so much! I’ve had lots of questions on that mirror – it was a Craigslist find, but its twin did make an appearance in the last Sex and the City movie (blogged about that here: http://welcometoheardmont.com/2010/06/a-home-decor-wheres-waldo/ ).

Believe it or not, I picked up the chair at the same place as the mirror. The guy who sold them had a warehouse full of antique furniture, art, etc to sell because he was leaving the interior design business!!! Believe me, if I’d had a few extra thousand dollars lying around, I would have bought it all! 🙂

  13. Colie says:

    Great redo!

Is the picture on the dresser that says 11 15 08 homemade?

    Its my sons DOB

    • Meredith says:

      Hi Colie,
Yes the 11 15 08 art is homemade! I got the idea from the site http://www.framethedate.com/ and googled until I found numbers I liked.

      • angie says:

I know this sounds stupid, but what did you type into google to search for the black and white date photos? I am having no luck with 06 28 08. I really like your 08.

        Thank you!

        • angie says:

          Thanks for the help Meredith!

        • Meredith says:

          Hey Angie,
I had the same problem as you did finding good images. Some of the numbers I did find ended up being parts of other numbers, like a 4-digit house number, for example. I know I tried typing in house number 11 or house number 15 at various points, but for the 08 I know I searched for 2008. If you search for 2008 the first image that pops up should be the firework one I used.
Once you find the right images it’s smooth sailing from there! Good luck!

  14. This turned out so great on such a small budget! Thanks for linking my Flaunt it Friday party, I’m featuring you. Please stop by and grab an “I was featured” button if you’d like. 🙂

Thanks for posting the grey and yellow! I am about to embark upon this color scheme for our dining room and it’s great to see some inspiration.

  19. Kim says:

I love the colors!! I really love the rug….it looks beautiful in the room! Great job….I am so jealous…..makes me want to get started on my own bedroom.

  20. Katrina says:

I saw this link and thought, “Why did our husband post our bedroom?” Once I followed the link I realized that although it looked eerily similar, this was not our bed! I guess I can only compliment you on your great taste! Here’s our reveal from a while ago: http://www.athomealterations.com/2010/10/guest-bedroom-reveal.html We’ve actually been working on changing it this month! We switched out the bed for a queen, rearranged some dressers and changed up the closet. We’ll be posting the re-reveal this week so come check it out if you want any inspirational ideas to tweek your room more!

  21. Candace says:

seriously in love with that brass mirror.

    in. love.

  22. megan says:

Love it! The colors are gorgeous and make it look so put together!! Great job 🙂 Don’t feel bad about the elliptical I had one in my dining rooms for years before I finally just hauled it out to the garage.

  23. Ooooh, Meredith! It’s beautiful! I love the color combination and every detail is so pretty (love that you keep it real too!). I haven’t had a chance to get through the links yet, but your post caught my 18-yr-old daughter’s attention right away – maybe she’ll be inspired to clean her room! lol) and she is the one who pointed out your link to me asap. She loves your kitchen as well. Like mother, like daughter. She loves your home too. 🙂

Thanks so much for linking your beautiful master bedroom!

  24. I think you did a fabulous job! I am terrible about mixing patterns, so I was really impressed with what you did. Love the rug!! Visiting from Centsational Girl. 🙂

  25. Ches says:

Love this space! The colors are wonderful and I really appreciate you “keeping it real” and showing us the full scope of the room and not just the “pretty” parts. I redid my bedroom awhile ago and just finished a mini kitchen redo. I hope you get the chance to check it out. I am a new follower and cant wait to see what other projects you have on here.

  26. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of your bedroom. It is so pretty! That chair is gorgeous!
On a side note, I love your blog header. I just created a similar one (took FOREVER, as I am no techie) and now I definitely take more notice of, and appreciate, a gorgeous header. Well done!

  27. This looks lovely. Great blog! Hope to see you a My Dream Canvas!

  28. Rebecca says:

I love your ceiling light. My husband wants to keep the ceiling fan but I want something that looks a bit more stylish. Where did you get it???

    • Meredith says:

Thanks so much Rebecca! You wouldn’t believe it, but that’s actually just a lamp shade from Target ($14.99, I think) that we wired in place after removing the glass globe that came with the ceiling fan. It’s a great compromise between a “pretty” light fixture and a practical fan.
At the cost of a lamp shade, you can’t go wrong trying this update!

Can you please share (or link me to where you already have) your light grey wall color in your room and your dark gray wall color in your bathroom.
I am doing a room in the same colors but might do the dark gray accent wall. Thanks!

    • Meredith says:

      Hi Angie,
Thanks for the question! Our bedroom wall color is Behr’s Dolphin Fin and the bathroom was color-matched to Valspar’s Mountain Smoke. I say color-matched because we originally had a light tan color mixed and then I changed my mind to dark gray. Instead of buying new paint, I just had them mix in more color until it was as close to Mountain Smoke as possible.
I hope that helps! Good luck with your room – I bet it will be gorgeous!
