Guest Room: A Collection of DIY Makeovers

You might not realize it, but we’re just one short weekend away from a guest bedroom reveal!  You’d probably given up on us ever showing you the full room, hadn’t you?  Before we can share the final photos of our space all dolled up for the visitors we’ve had the past few weekends, I wanted to share all the befores and afters that went into this room.

First up – the guest bed itself.  We sold our old metal bedframe and put the proceeds towards building our own headboard.  What started as a piece of MDF became a teal beauty with brass nailhead trim.  One of my favorite elements in the room!

We took cues from that peacock pillow for the rest of the room – a vintage typewriter cart got a coat of green paint and became a table for the left side of the bed…

And we painted the back of a hand-me-down bookcase peacock blue for additional storage on the right side.

That wasn’t the only furniture we made-over though.  This dresser (a $10 Craigslist find) got a coat of white and now happily holds my crafting supplies in its drawers.  We kept the original hardware because once the dresser was cleaned up, the handles seemed to fit the style of our room perfectly (and were even subtly peacock-feather-y, themselves).

I made over this chair for a second time by recovering the seats with leftover fabric from our DIY guest room drapes.

Speaking of drapes, I whipped up a set of lined curtains for this room (the second set) from this beautiful fabric I found at a local craft store.

Then we turned our attention to the closet area.  I knew it would become the center for all things crafty in this room and wanted to give it a bit of separation and POP!  A hand-painted pattern did the trick.

But not all overnight guests want to be bombarded with pattern while they sleep, so I whipped up a set of these drop-cloth curtains and then painted faux ribbon edging.

Last but not least, this amazing light fixture I scored was re-wired and cleaned up to take a very special place in this room.

Want to see where all these pieces ended up?  Dying to see the whole picture?  Don’t worry, all will be revealed on Monday!

Check back tomorrow for our Friday Five and thanks for reading!
