Console Table Crisis

Ok, so I only titled this post Console Table Crisis because Console Table Dilemma didn’t sound as good, but if I’m being honest it’s probably not really a CRISIS. 😛

Anyway, remember a couple weeks ago when we were trying to find a new console table for our entryway?

Entryway Empty

Well now I don’t know whether to be happy or sad.  Happy because I think I’ve found the perfect table, but sad because of course it would have to be 6 hours away in Dallas (at the nearest Ikea).  Boo!

Want to see the piece we’ve been drooling over?

malm dressing table

It’s the simple, white, clean-lined Malm Dressing Table, and amazingly it fits all our criteria. (1) Leggy (2) Light-colored (3) Less than 18″ deep (4) Concealed storage (5) Not super expensive.

I spotted the piece on the new-to-me blog Our House the other day (highly recommended read, by the way) and loved the way it looked in a real life setting.

Simple and unassuming, but classy and it gets the job done!

Now the dilemma becomes whether we’ll actually be able to get it.  A trip to Dallas is not in our future, so we’ll have to get more creative.  Seriously Ikea, you just need to open a store in Northwest Arkansas.  Actually, I’m not picky.  Little Rock, Springfield, Tulsa or Kansas City would work too!

The most frustrating part of this story is that we have a friend who was recently able to call the Dallas Ikea store and have them ship an item from the store to him (he lives in Northwest AR too) via FedEx or UPS at a reasonable rate.  When I called the Dallas store to get a shipping quote for the exact same scenario, they told me that they do not ship directly from the store to customers and that I would have to go through the catalog orders department.

Not a good sign – I’ve tried getting medium-sized pieces of furniture this way in the past and the shipping quote has been in the $300+ range.  After 30 minutes on hold with the catalog department, I hung up.

I’ll try again another time, but I want to ask – have you successfully ordered something from Ikea and paid a reasonable amount for shipping?  And why doesn’t Ikea sell things online like any other big box store?  And mostly, what do you think of the console table – do you think it will look good in our entryway if we can ever get our hands on it?!

I tried to order the Expedit workstation last night. It costs $119 and the shipping was quoted at over $300 just like you said. The trip from Boise, ID to my nearest Ikea in Draper, UT is also 6 hours away. Lucy for my my sister-in-law is going down there at the end of the month and is going to pick one up for me. I don’t understand why their shipping costs are so high when most other companies will offer free shipping for orders over $50! *frustrated*

I LOVE the console table! I would call the store back at a different time … you might get a different answer from a different employee.

Not sure how quickly you want it, but there’s an IKEA in Denver.

Ikea online? I’m super spoiled by not having to ship things from Ikea but I don’t know what I’d do without them. I feel like Arkansas isn’t that rural, but I guess the population density must not be there. We get so many college students at the ones on East Coast.

Bummer, I just checked and it’s not even available online. It doesn’t seem like a very difficult design though, just some wood with an enameled finish.

Like the console table a lot! No advice on how to get it though except for the previous idea of calling back and speaking to another employee!

  6. Have you tried looking on Craigslist to see if someone has the Ikea table that lives closer to you?

I agree. We need an Ikea here. Have you thought about a DIY version? This plan from Ana White might work with a few modifications. 🙂

as crazy as this may sound, i just read your entire blog (yes, entire) today. i found myself with the day off and didn’t want to sit around watching tv! i’m newly engaged and starting to worry about all of the things i’ll need to know how to do in our starter home, and realized i had pinned the headboard you made for your guestroom. i decided to check out your blog and (clearly) couldn’t stop. i worked my way forward from the beginning, and i must say, you guys have done an AMAZING job!

Maybe we can get Uncle Mike to pick it up when he goes to Dallas!! He’d love that!

  11. Mandy says:

I was going to suggest Ana White but Jenny B. beat me to it! 🙂
The design seems pretty simple and you guys seem pretty handy, so…

Do you have friends or family that live near an Ikea who would be willing to buy it and ship it to you?

  12. I think the console table will be a great aesthetic and functional addition! Good luck figuring out how to actually get it. 🙂

Hi there! I live in Atlanta but grew up in Arkansas. I’ll actually be driving to Little Rock to visit my family during the weekend of April 6th and it might be a possibility for me to go to our local Ikea and drive the console up to LR. I know you’re in NW Arkansas but LR is a lot closer than Dallas! Maybe you can come pick it up there?

I also wanted some Ikea items and I found someone on the internet that goes to Ikea in Ga. and you can have them pickup items for a small charge. BUT they deliver to Jonesboro. If you want more info let me know.

All I can do is sing,”leggy leggy leggy leggy blonde.” Oh, and I like it.

  16. There is a local delivery service in our area that makes monthly runs ot IKEA and charges a shipping fee. Maybe there’s something like that in your neck of the woods?

  17. Candi says:

I’m from Little Rock and totally agree with the ‘brink Ikea here’ idea. I’m on board!

    Love the table!

My husband and I just moved from Fayetteville to west Texas, and the nearest Ikea is still 3.5-4 hours away! We were thinking of buying the Karlstad sofa but found a comparable one locally for about the same price, shipping and other obstacles included. Your creative solution to the console crisis looks great — keep up the lovely work!
